In celebration of the opening of 155 Freeman, Triple Canopy is pleased to present a marathon reading of Gertrude Stein’s enormously long and allegedly unreadable novel The Making of Americans: Being a History of a Family’s Progress. This weekend, starting on Friday at 7 p.m., an invited list of New York–based artists, writers, publishers, scholars, and other collaborators will gather in Greenpoint to perform the entirety of Stein’s text in a continuous read-in, expected to last 48 hours, more or less. Four years after Triple Canopy first hit the Web, we've decided to put our survival in the hands of our readers. It's not that we're struggling or enjoy guilt trips. We've just come to realize that Triple Canopy can only continue to be successful and sustainable if readers decide they value the work we're doing and, yes, assign a dollar amount to that value. And so we're asking you to consider becoming a member of Triple Canopy for as little as $3 per month.

Since 2008, we've worked extremely hard to build a new model for arts publishing: We've established a laboratory for forward-thinking technology and design, collaborating with writers and artists to develop original (and patently unoriginal) work that employs the flash and frisson of new media even as it strives to slow down the experience of reading online. And we've been determined to pay the artists, writers, technologists, and designers with whom we work.

We're not going to do a fundraising drive that interrupts your regular programming; we're not going to put up a paywall that blocks access to articles. But we want to take a moment to emphasize the value—and thus real, monetary costs—of our work. And we want to ask you to think of yourself not just as consumer but a supporter of that work—a supporter of ideas and arguments that require more than 140 characters, true experimentation rather than endlessly recycled "content," and a living wage for all responsible parties.

In the coming year, your contribution will help us publish on the Web and in print; organize residencies and workshops and contribute to exhibitions at venues ranging from the Museum of Modern Art to Columbia College (Chicago) to Duplex (Sarajevo); develop technologies that will change the nature of reading online; build a dedicated iPad application; and run our new office and venue in Brooklyn, 155 Freeman, along with Light Industry and the Public School New York. And for a small monthly pledge, you'll receive a copy of our new book, Invalid Format: An Anthology of Triple Canopy; free entry to events at 155 Freeman; and the JF & SON Grid Tote, a sturdy—yet sleek!—nylon canvas bag with a full-length side pocket, designed after Invalid Format.

Triple Canopy is pleased to announce its third annual call for proposals. Commissions will be considered under six project areas and published in the course of the next year. Artistic, editorial, and technical staff will work closely with contributors as they develop the best approach to realizing their projects on the Web, from the conceptual phase to the design and technological production. Recipients receive:

• Three to six months of artistic, editorial, and technical support
  
• Honorarium of up to $300 as well as material costs
  
• Opportunity to present the project to an audience in the form of a reading, workshop, or discussion
  
• Opportunity for inclusion in our annual print publication, Invalid Format: An Anthology of Triple Canopy, as well as our ongoing broadsheet series
  
• Archiving and long-term maintenance of the final project by technical staff
  

Triple Canopy welcomes artist projects that treat the Internet as a medium and seek to develop ideas that engage withuse —but reach beyonduse —its specific qualities and attendant modes of readership and viewership; artful reporting, intelligible philosophizing, distinctive fictionalizing and the like. Because of Triple Canopy's unique interface we encourage writers not to be bound by the standard styles of magazine, art, and academic writing.

Applications are due by midnight on Monday, February 13, 2012. Applicants will be notified by March 1 whether their proposals have reached the second round of review. Commission recipients will be announced on April 3. Projects will be developed in collaboration with Triple Canopy for publication in the online magazine (or live presentation in New York) between July 1, 2012 and June 30, 2013.

We're pleased to announce the publication of our fifteenth issue, Negative Infinity, which will be unfurled in installments over the next few weeks. It includes a wide range of writing and artist projects, including David Auerbach's treatise on 4chan, anonymity, and online culture; Gabriella Coleman's investigation of the hacktivist group Anonymous; a survey of #OWS sound bites and stanzas; Zoe Beloff's consideration of motion studies, mental illness, and slapstick; and photographic essays on the criminalization of homosexuality in Russia, the search for a friend in Ulan-Ude, and the sunken monuments of the Meadowlands.

Our first book, Invalid Format: An Anthology of Triple Canopy, Volume 1, is now available for pre-order. Designed in collaboration with Project Projects, the book is at once an archive of Triple Canopy's widespread publishing activities and a translation into print of projects that originally appeared in other forms. This inaugural volume of Invalid Format includes artist projects and literary work published in the first year of Triple Canopy's existence, documentation of public programs, and a sampling of foundational correspondence. In form and content, the book explores how works produced for the screen might fully inhabit the page. Consider Invalid Format a new design for reading, the book as content-management system.

Invalid Format will be published at least annually, and will be available at select bookshops worldwide as well as on Triple Canopy's website.
